The Nintendo DSi is the latest DS offering from Nintendo. It has already been released in Japan and is due to be in the UK in the spring of 2009.

Nintendo have also announced that there will be a new accessory for the Nintendo DS consoles. The Nintendo DS pedometer has been designed for use in a fitness game. The name of the game is as yet unknown, but it is likely to be something along the lines of Lifestyle Rhythm DS.

Nintendo have confirmed that the new Nintendo DSi console is to be region locked despite the fact that the previous console in the range, the DS Lite, was not. According to Nintendo this is due to the fact that the console “embeds net communication functionality within itself”. It is also Nintendo’s intention to provide net services that are specific to each region. Parental control functionality will also be different for each region. These changes do not apply to existing Nintendo DS software which will still be region free. The Nintendo DSi’s integrated browser will not be affected and users will be able to share their photographs worldwide.

Most keen gamers will know that the Nintendo DSi will be out in the UK during Spring 2009. It is tempting to avoid any problems with Nintendo DSi availability by snapping up that online ‘Nintendo DSi cheap price’. However, several fakes have already hit the UK market so be sure that any site you use is credible. Remember too, that the console is region specific, so you need to ensure that yours can be used in the UK.

Although the Nintendo DSi has yet to be released in the UK, it should be appearing sometime in spring 2009, and there have already been a number of reviews appearing on the internet.

Generally reviewers liked the new matte finish of the Nintendo DSi which is resistant to fingerprints, and the larger and brighter screen. The larger screen and the higher brightness level means that for vividly colourful games such as Elite Beat Agents the Nintendo DSi easily beats the Nintendo DS Lite. However, they did include the caveat that using the screen on its highest brightness setting did reduce the battery life. Although at 2 hours and 30 minutes re-charging the Nintendo DSi is 30 minutes faster than the Nintendo DS Lite. The larger screen and the slightly longer stylus pen should make for better gaming sessions. Reviewers also enjoyed playing with the new cameras and the music capabilities of the Nintendo DSi.

They were less happy with the loss of the Game Boy Advance slot. The SD card slot was considered a plus as, although there is 256 MB of onboard memory, hard-core gamers will need the extra space. In trials, downloading the software (only the web browser at the moment is available) worked seamlessly, the only gripe being that the web browser could not be launched from the SD card, but had to be moved to the internal memory. Reviewers also liked the new Nintendo DSi menu; simply tapping the power button will return you to the menu, and the fact that it is now possible to hot-swap game cards. As soon as a DS card is inserted it appears on the menu. The move of the power button to the front of the console rather than as a slider on the side is also considered an improvement as the user is less likely to accidentally switch off the console in their bag or pocket. Overall the Nintendo DSi was seen as an excellent refresh of what was already a good hand-held games console.

The real test of the Nintendo DSi will be whether new games are released that can utilise the console’s new features such as its cameras. Wario: Photograph is one such game that has already been announced. Its success will also depend on how easy it is to use and whether gamers are willing to download content from the DSi Shop.

In spring 2009 UK retailers should have the Nintendo DSi in stock. A word of caution for those desperate to try out the new console – unless you are importing a Nintendo DSi you should not purchase one before its UK release, otherwise that ‘Nintendo DSi cheap price’ will not turn out to be as good a deal as you first thought. The Nintendo DSi price for the UK is probably going to be around £120 so if someone is offering a Nintendo DSi at a significantly cheaper price then it may well be a fake.

The Nintendo DSi is the third version of the Nintendo DS handheld console. Nintendo have listened to their customers and as a result they have added new functions as well as improving on the existing functionality of the Nintendo DS.

One of the aims in the development of the new console was to improve its portability. Nintendo wanted to make the console as thin as possible without affecting the durability. The Nintendo DSi is 2.6mm wide which is 12% thinner than the DS Lite that preceded it. However, this has meant that something had to be sacrificed and so the slot for the Game Boy Advance software has been removed.

Nintendo had received many requests from users for larger screens. This presented them with a problem if they wanted to produce a lighter console because the weight of an LCD increases as its dimensions increase. The LCD screen has been increased from 3 inches to 3.25 inches which increases the visual area per screen by around 17%. Improvements have also been made to the sound quality and speaker volume.

New features that have been added are an audio player function and a camera. Some people may feel that with similar functions being offered by many modern mobile phones these functions do not add much to the Nintendo DSi, especially as the camera does not have the resolution offered by mobile phones and digital cameras. However, Nintendo claims that they are not trying to compete with these devices, rather the aim is to allow users to be creative and have fun playing with the pictures. The software for the camera will enable users to use a variety of special effects to take pictures in real-time. For example they can change colours, draw frames, create composite pictures or add graffiti. The audio player is not simply used for audio playback; users can alter the pitch or speed. Other functions make it easier to copy music, practise foreign languages or play a musical instrument. Again the aim is not to compete with MP3 players, but to allow users to play around with the sounds. The console has 256 MB onboard memory and an SD card slot. These will allow users to store music, pictures and download games from the DSi Shop. The Nintendo DSi is the first DS to have upgradeable firmware.

Keen game players will find that during spring 2009 UK retailers will start to have the Nintendo DSi in stock. The popularity of the Nintendo DSi ensures that Nintendo DSi availability will be good. The main problem that consumers will have is not so much finding Nintendo DSi stock but the best Nintendo DSi price. Online price comparison sites with their listings of Nintendo DSi prices and Nintendo DSi cheapest price offering are your best bet. The Nintendo DSi is one of a family of products, with DS being the original design whilst Nintendo DS Lite and Nintendo DSi are redesigns of the original console. Gamers will be familiar with this handheld dual-screen game console. The Nintendo DS first came on the scene in 2004 when it was released in Japan, Canada and the United States. The console has what is described as a clamshell design. The Game Boy Advance SP is similar although the Nintendo DS was not designed to be a successor to that console. Inside there are two LCD screens, the bottom one of which is a touch-screen. To allow players to interact with each other the console has a built-in microphone and complies with Wi-Fi standards. These two features also allowed players to take advantage of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service which was launched later.

The first redesign of the console was the Nintendo DS Lite which was released in March, 2006 in Japan. Later in the year it was released in Europe, North America and, in June 2006, in Australia. The Nintendo DS Lite is lighter and slimmer than the original console and the screens are brighter.

In October 2008, at the Nintendo Fall Media Summit, Nintendo announced that it intended to release the next redesign of the Nintendo DS, the Nintendo DSi. Although Nintendo had been doing well in 2008 it had reached market saturation in its home country of Japan which led to a slowdown in the sales of the DS Lite console. To maintain its position as leader in the field of handheld game consoles Nintendo produced the Nintendo DSi. The system was released in November 2008 in Japan and it has proved very popular. The release date for Europe and America is likely to be the first quarter of 2009.
